Taylor and Welch Advance to Rowing World Championship Final

Ben Taylor and Oli Welch delivered a dominant performance in the men's pair semi-finals at the World Rowing Championships on the Bosbaan course in Amsterdam. The New Zealand duo led their race from start to finish, qualifying for the A-final and positioning themselves to contend for a second consecutive world title.

Their semi-final victory was achieved in 6 minutes, 39.99 seconds, nearly two seconds ahead of their closest rivals, Australia. Romania placed third in the same race. Italy won the second semi-final, with a time almost three seconds slower than Taylor and Welch.

Oli Welch expressed satisfaction with their race strategy, particularly their start. "I think we're naturally quite quick out of the blocks," Welch noted. "We're quite explosive in the gym so it lends itself to a quick start. From there, we just try to control the race from the front."

Welch remained tight-lipped about their specific tactical plans for the final, anticipating a strong challenge from the Australian pair, Angus Dawson and Alexander Hill. He added, "Don't want to give it away. The final will definitely be exciting, they'll be going for it even more, and so will we."

Other New Zealand crews also competed, with varying results. The men's double sculls team of Ben Mason and Finn Hamill finished fifth in their semi-final, which means they will compete in a B-final. Similarly, the women's pair, Katie Lush and Juliette Lequeux, will also race in a B-final after placing fourth in their semi-final.

In the women's single sculls, Kathryn Glen secured a quarter-final berth despite finishing fifth in her heat. Glen recently returned to rowing after a rib injury in May sidelined her from World Cup events. She expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, "I feel like it's a bit of a once in a lifetime opportunity to say that you're the women's single (sculler), so just trying to embrace that while I'm here."
