Fog Disrupts Flights at Auckland Airport

Auckland Airport experienced widespread flight disruptions due to heavy fog, leading to numerous cancellations and delays, particularly for regional services. This marks the third time in recent weeks that fog restrictions have affected operations at the country’s largest airport.

According to an airport spokesperson, international and main trunk domestic flights remained unaffected by the conditions and were scheduled to depart as normal. However, one report indicated that the airport’s log showed extensive delays for arriving aircraft.

Early morning figures suggested that nearly 40 flights were either cancelled or delayed. Further details from one account specified that 19 flights were cancelled, and 36 flights were impacted overall. Among these, nine regional departure flights and ten regional arrival flights were called off.

As of 7:40 AM, 37 regional flights were affected, with five regional departures and thirteen regional arrivals experiencing delays. Air New Zealand’s flight log, as reported by one source, showed 18 delayed flights and six cancellations.

The latest disruption follows similar incidents in recent weeks. On August 10, hazy conditions led to the cancellation of eight domestic regional flights. That same day, six domestic and five international flights were delayed before restrictions were lifted at 8:21 AM. Four days later, thick fog caused further restrictions, delaying at least 17 domestic flights and cancelling seven, including one main trunk flight to Dunedin.

MetService’s forecast for the Auckland area had predicted morning fog, followed by cloudy periods and a chance of showers. The airport advised all passengers to check their flight status directly with their airlines before travelling.
